The design of the ZERI-Pavilion is based on a new philosophy: industrial production without waste is possible, and when waste is produced it can be recycled. This idea originates with the Belgian Gunter Pauli. In 1994 he founded the Zero Emissions Research Initiative (ZERI), a research forum. The pavilion in Hanover is constructed following ZERI's principles. Construction itself produced no waste. The pavilion is for the most part made of bamboo, and its reinforcing materials, cement and copper, are recycled products. The mushroom-shaped structure also has other advantages: it is earthquake proof and light. To inspire other architects, the exhibition will be reconstructed in Paris and Tokyo. In Hanover, ten ZERI projects are exhibited: amongst them are a Swedish factory that composts recyclable plastics, and a Columbian coffee plantation that uses plant waste for the cultivation of mushrooms.
