If some 200 key ecological regions, the so-called Global 200, are protected, 90 % of the Earth's biological diversity can be saved. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) focuses on the protection of these eco-regions in its contribution to EXPO. The Global 200 are unique habitats which cannot be found anywhere else on the Earth in the same form. Key regions include, for example, the Galapagos Islands in South America, the Congo River basin in Africa and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The Alps, the Danube and the Wattenmeer (shallows) are also part of the network. The artist Stefan Szczesny designed a "World Map of Life" for the EXPO pavilion, comprised of six walls surrounding the pavilion with its 135,000 puzzle pieces made of ceramic. The map stands for the five continents and Antarctica. Visitors can buy a puzzle piece for DM 200; proceeds go towards projects in the selected regions.
